New comfort and safety technology The new XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully-loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo’s Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions. “We have focused on building a car that can deliver pleasure to all of your senses – from a commanding view of the road ahead in a beautifully appointed and calm cabin, to a safe, inspired and confident ride,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Product and Quality at Volvo Car Group. “We’ve paid particular attention to making life easier for our customers by providing them with the creature comforts and services that take the hassle out of everyday life.” Performance The new XC60 offers Volvo’s T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid at the top of the powertrain range, delivering 407hp and acceleration from 0-100km in 5.3s. “We have a wide range of powertrains. The new XC60 will launch with the diesel D4 engine at 190hp and the D5 with PowerPulse technology delivering 235hp. We also have the petrol-powered T5 delivering 254hp and the T6, which with both turbo and superchargers attached, delivers 320hp and 400Nm of torque,” added Henrik Green. Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment and connected services offer, Sensus, and the Volvo On Call app both receive a graphical update with improved usability. As in the 90 Series cars, smartphone integration with CarPlay and Android Auto is also available. Sculpted feel “The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology - all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make our customers feel special,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group. This work builds on the long-established relationship between Qualcomm Technologies and LG since the two companies delivered their first telematics system in 2004. On the path to 5G, LG is developing advanced automotive connectivity solutions based on Qualcomm Technologies’ connected car platform, which features support for Gigabit LTE speeds using the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, and is complemented by the QCA65x4 Wi-Fi 802.11ac solution. The connected car platform also supports 802.11p/DSRC and C-V2X, based upon 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 14 specifications. “The advanced wireless capabilities of 5G and C-V2X will usher in new use cases necessary to fulfill our vision for increasingly connected and autonomous vehicles,” said Kim Jin-yong, executive vice president, VC Smart Business Unit, LG Electronics. “As a leading inventor of 5G technologies and our key modem provider for telematics, Qualcomm Technologies is the company of choice for bringing the next-generation wireless solutions that leading automakers need and expect.” With a strong evolution path to 5G, C-V2X technology is a key feature for safety conscious and autonomous driving solutions. C-V2X complements other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensors, such as cameras, radar and LIDAR, to provide information about the vehicle’s surroundings, even in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. In addition to allowing for 360 degree NLOS, C-V2X is also designed to allow for enhanced situational awareness by detecting and exchanging information using direct communications in the 5.9GHz ITS band with other vehicles, infrastructure and pedestrians’ devices, as well as network-based communications to cloud services using commercial cellular bands. Compared to current technologies, C-V2X is designed to deliver enhanced V2X direct communication range, reliability, latency and superior NLOS performance. The technology is supported by a broad ecosystem based on 3GPP Release 14 specifications, with trials expected to begin later this year. “Wireless communications provide the vehicle with data that truly complements what other sensors deliver. For instance, C-V2X and its evolution to 5G can help the car discover what is around corners, detecting a pedestrian’s smartphone or a car approaching an intersection even when the object is obstructed by buildings or other large vehicles,” said Patrick Little, senior vice president and general manager, automotive, Qualcomm Technologies. C-V2X evolution to 5G offers more wireless communication capabilities for autonomous vehicles, supporting advanced use cases such as high-throughput sensor data/map sharing among vehicles, see-through capabilities streaming camera information from one car to another, and wideband ranging for improved positioning – all while maintaining backward compatibility with 3GPP Rel. 14 C-V2X. Not that there are any grudges held against Detroit: after all, its zoo does feature North America’s largest polar bear exhibit. But those of us walking the halls of MWC can expect to see a wide range of automotive-related demonstrations, reflecting the fact that telco-oriented companies of all types see massive business potential in this market. A timely report from Mobile World Live ‘Connected cars: from here to autonomy,’ points out that telecom operators are second only to car makers in terms of being best positioned to exploit the trend towards connected cars. With revenues flattening in their traditional businesses, telcos are flocking to the automotive market as an opportunity to sell new, value-added services to their customers. At Wind River, the Titanium Cloud network virtualisation platform is a critical element of the comprehensive autonomous car demonstration in Intel’s booth (Hall 3, booth 3E31). As the automotive industry moves from ‘connected cars’ to ‘autonomous cars’, a wide range of technologies must be integrated seamlessly in order to deliver the complete experiences that drivers will expect, especially as they become just passengers. In order to make automated driving a reality, three areas must come together: car, connectivity and cloud. At the Intel demo next week, there will be an efficient, well-orchestrated combination of technologies that include: 5G 28GHz connectivity to provide the low latency and high bandwidth required for cars as they become mini data centres on wheels; Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), enabling applications running in cloud data centres at the edge of the network to respond in real time to high-speed data from connected cars; Network slicing, which delivers guaranteed bandwidth and Quality-of-Service (QoS) for the multiple network connections required by each car; Merged Reality (MR) for improved navigation and an enhanced driver (passenger) experience; End-to-end security, which was flagged in the Mobile World Live report as the number one customer concern in this market. In the MWC demo, all these applications and technologies will be running on the Intel FlexRAN platform, which is an end-to-end architecture, supported by multiple ecosystem partners, that provides scalable-density virtualised baseband pooling. FlexRAN relies on the Titanium Cloud network virtualisation platform to deliver the service uptime, security, low latency communication and operational simplicity that are required for this highly challenging use case. At MWC next week this demonstration, will offer a fascinating glimpse into the driving experience that’s the future and also previews a market that promises new business opportunities throughout the telecom industry. The Open Auto Drive Forum (OADF) is a networking platform for cross-domain topics in the area of autonomous driving, presenting the latest developments towards a connected world of autonomous cars. “Active participation in the OADF is an important undertaking for TISA and mutually beneficial for both organisations. Real time, high-precision traffic information is vital for autonomously driving vehicles. The complex requirements of an automated driving situation, together with the specific conditions of M2M communication in that context, create a formidable challenge that propels our current developments towards next-generation traffic data standards,” said Matthias Unbehaun, Executive Director of TISA, the Traveller Information Services Association, which hosted the meeting. "2017 will be a major milestone for the ADASIS Forum and we are committed to publish our new ADASIS V3 specification this year. We see the OADF forum as a place for synchronisation of requirements and specifications as well as solutions for our contribution to autonomous driving," said Michael Klingsöhr, ADASIS Chairman. Some other topics covered in breakout sessions included standardisation requirements for environmental model interfaces and HD Maps on live map delivery chains backend integrity levels and on metadata for map quality. Dr. Volker Sasse, the OADF speaker and Chairman of the Navigation Data Standard (NDS) Association wrapped up the forum concluding the conference was a successful step forward for the development of autonomous driving. "The time of simple navigation is over. The Autonomous Driving (AD) revolution means shifting from individualism to collectivism and our OMEGA project takes care of these relevant future AD requirements. The AD information, which is always supported by highly accurate and up to date practices, is selected in flexible geometric or attribute-based portions and will be stored and distributed in multiple locations. Therefore each information user is simultaneously also a collector, meaning the individual serves the community. All standardisation organisations will cooperate in this brave new world,” explained Dr. V. Sasse. During this landmark race, one of the vehicles crashed after miscalculating a corner at high speed. Speaking with the BBC, Justin Cooke, Chief Marketing Officer, Roborace, said: "One of the cars was trying to perform a manoeuvre, and it went really full-throttle and took the corner quite sharply and caught the edge of the barrier." While the DevBot’s do have a cabin for a driver to sit in, during this test race no drivers were present. This, combined with crash barriers and a maximum speed limit of 115mph, meant that no humans were hurt. The Roborace test series is still in development, but the ultimate goal is to have multiple teams racing against each other, each with the same car design, but writing their own artificial intelligence software to control them. The Devbots make use of a laser-based Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensing method to guide themselves. They also communicate to avoid collisions with each other. While the DevBot 2 did get damaged, the DevBot 1 successfully navigated an unexpected obstacle on the track: a dog. Cooke stated that when the inquisitive animal ran onto the road, “the car was able to slow down, avoid it and take another path." During the Mobile World Congress trade show taking place from 27th February-2nd March in Barcelona, Denis Sverdlov, Roborace’s Chief Executive, is expected to unveil more details about the company’s plans. Following this, attention will shift to Mexico City on 1st April for the next Formula E race. While the cars didn’t crash into each other or injure any spectators, the outcome of the race shows that there is still a lot of work to do on autonomous racing cars before they become standard practice. On-vehicle power is the fuel-efficient, low-noise and convenient alternative to transporting separate compressors and generators from site to site. Systems can provide mobile compressed air and electric power whilst delivering improved vehicle utilisation and lower exhaust emissions, with a model available to suit each type of commercial vehicle and business. Other OVP options that can be supplied by Winton include hydraulic power or high pressure water jetting. Suitable for 3-26 tonne commercial vehicles, Winton’s systems are designed for a wide variety of applications, and can be used for the operation of road drills, breakers, hand tools, site lighting and electro fusion equipment. They can deliver compressed air from 35-160cfm at pressures of 100-180psi and can be used in conjunction with hydraulic or mobile electric power delivering from 1-10kVA at 110, 240V or dual voltage with a range of electric outlets up to 32A. Furthermore, Winton’s systems are lightweight. Since the introduction of Euro 6, equipment weight has become a major consideration for all commercial vehicle managers. In response to this Winton has honed its offering to achieve a lower weight for its core DLPTO system. Through practical alterations such as replacing steel with lighter materials including plastic and alloys, reconfiguring the structure of the drive and using lightweight cabling, total weight has been reduced without compromising the integrity of the system or undermining quality. Winton also offers a compact engine mounted system for both front and rear wheel drive vehicles, where the on-vehicle power system is installed within the engine compartment to reduce the overall vehicle weight and increase payload. These lightweight innovations will be on display on stand 5H80, and visitors can take a closer, hands-on look at the latest underfloor DLPTO system and bi-turbo under-bonnet engine mounted FWD system. Paul Smith, commercial manager at Winton, said: “The Commercial Vehicle Show is always a successful event for us, as our range of systems holds a solution for such a wide spectrum of businesses. We look forward to showing visitors our solutions, and explaining more about how we have addressed the requirements of Euro 6.” Winton offers a one-stop-shop design and build service alongside service, repair and maintenance packages, and boasts a 98% first time fix rate. Its systems are installed in line with vehicle manufacturer guidelines, and are believed to be the only on-vehicle power systems in the UK to be installed and certified to N1 European National Small Series Type Approval.
